Department of Energy Issues Funding Opportunity Announcement to U.S. Universities for Nuclear Research Infrastructure Needs

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today issued a new Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), valued at least $2.25 million for equipment and infrastructure upgrades at U.S. universities enhancing their ability to conduct cutting-edge nuclear research and development.  Infrastructure includes equipment and instrumentation for research reactors and other nuclear science and engineering laboratories and facilities.

“This Funding Opportunity Announcement demonstrates our continued commitment to support educational institutions essential to ensure the expansion of clean and safe nuclear power in the United States,” said DOE’s acting Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Shane Johnson. “The development of nuclear science and engineering infrastructure at universities is necessary for furthering research and development that supports DOE’s mission, the nation's nuclear energy challenges and the training of nuclear scientists and engineers.”

Applications for the Infrastructure FOA are due April 15, 2009.  Applications must be submitted through FedConnect to be considered for award.

DOE anticipates announcing the selection by mid June 2009 with grants issued by September 2009.
