NHTSA Study: More Than 1,700 Fatalities, 840,000 Injuries Yearly Due to Vehicle Incidents Off Public Highways
In its most comprehensive report yet, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has completed an assessment of injuries and fatalities involving motor vehicles not in traffic. The new study concluded that more than 1,700 fatalities and over 840,000 injuries annually can be attributed to vehicle incidents off public highways. The new study also ranks injuries and fatalities by incident type. NHTSA will continue to track these data and report them bi-annually.

The safety of infants and children is a vital part of NHTSA’s mission. Parents and caregivers can be assured that correctly placing your child in a safety seat in the rear of the vehicle is absolutely the best protection against serious or fatal injury in a crash. Consumers Can Sign Up for Free Electronic Vehicle Recall Alerts From NHTSA
Vehicle owners across the nation can be instantly informed of a safety recall under a new automated alert system announced Nov. 7 by DOT Secretary Mary E. Peters. The recall alerts can be received via e-mail or RSS-feeds on personal computers, cell phones or PDA devices-automatically and free-of-charge.
