Sunshine State Lands Nation's First TIFIA Loan of 2009

WASHINGTON - Florida's plans for congestion relief in Broward County just received help from the U.S. Department of Transportation through its approval of a $603 million loan to build new express lanes on I-595, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced today. Construction is now expected to begin this summer. "The new express lanes will bring congestion relief and give drivers more choices for a better commute on this important highway in south Florida," said Secretary LaHood. Nation's Driving Continues to Fall
Consecutive 14-Month Drop Tops 115 Billion Miles

WASHINGTON - With new data released today, America's trend of declining driving continued into its second year with 3.8 billion fewer vehicle-miles traveled (VMT), or 1.6 percent less, in December 2008 compared to the same month a year earlier. Tolling and Pricing Program

The Office of Operations launched a new Tolling and Pricing Program Web site. In an effort to create a more user friendly experience when searching for information about federal pricing programs, the new site includes valuable information that was once included on three separate sites: the Tolling and Pricing Opportunities, the Value Pricing Pilot Program (VPPP) and the VPPP site on the Knowledge Exchange. This is just the first step in streamlining information on one of the critical FHWA programs. In the future, the site will also feature a subject index that will help the user find the subjects they are looking for quickly instead of searching the entire site.

SAFETEA-LU

The Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) was enacted August 10, 2005, as Public Law 109-59. SAFETEA-LU authorizes the Federal surface transportation programs for highways, highway safety, and transit for the 5-year period 2005-2009.

Knowledge Exchange

FHWA is sponsoring web-based communities of practice (CoP's) to promote free and open knowledge exchange on such topics as environment and planning, air quality, high performance concrete, and transportation asset management. Join a group of your peers throughout the highway community to discuss, collaborate, and exchange ideas and practices on a wide range of interesting and timely topics on one of the FHWA Knowledge Communities.

ARRA logo
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA)

The ARRA provides significant new funding for transportation infrastructure. FHWA is working to ensure that our partners and stakeholders have the tools they need to implement the legislation and to ensure effective coordination among Federal agencies. Balancing Infrastructure Improvements with Historic Preservation: The Front Street Rehabilitation Project

In 1991, the City of Natchitoches, Louisiana, applied for (and later received) Transportation Enhancement (TE) funding from the State TE manager to rehabilitate six blocks of its historic Front Street. The Front Street Rehabilitation Project faced many challenges from the start. Residents had concerns that critically needed street improvements would diminish the area's character, and they spoke out publicly against any proposed renovations. These concerns made it difficult for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD) to move ahead. Find out more in the March issue of "Successes in Stewardship".
