The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) held a public hearing on September 10 and 11, 2007. The purpose of the public hearing was for FDA to solicit information and comments from interested persons about programs currently in use regarding the use of symbols to communicate nutrition information on food labels. The agency is aware of the increased use of symbols in food labeling, both domestically and internationally, and would like to obtain more information about these symbol programs. Of particular interest is the consumer research performed in the development, implementation, and evaluation of these programs and the determination of the nutrient criteria for the symbols.
