Research Opportunity at National Center for Earth-surface Dynamics - River and Coastal Restoration
Undergraduate students in Civil Engineering, Geology, Biology, Ecology, Hydrology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and related fields are invited to apply to participate in NSF-sponsored summer research at the National Center for Earth-surface Dynamics.

Program dates: May 31 to August 8, 2009

Application Deadline: February 20, 2009

Students work on one of two interdisciplinary teams: "Team Delta" focuses on issues in coastal Louisiana (www.wbi.lsu.edu) and "Team Marmot" focuses on issues related to the 2007 removal of the Marmot dam on Oregon's Sandy River (www.marmotdam.com). Both teams spend June at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL) (www.safl.umn.edu), at the University of Minnesota, using experimental modeling to develop an understanding of the physical and biological processes they will explore in the field. The teams then perform field research in July, returning to Minnesota to synthesize their research in posters and papers.

All expenses are paid and students will receive a stipend. Students from groups underrepresented in the sciences are encouraged to apply.

Summer Undergraduate Research on Invasive Species and Introduced Genotypes
Dear Student
I write to invite you to apply for our summer undergraduate research program in Risk Analysis for Introduced Species and Genotypes. Our website address is http://isg-igert.umn.edu/default.htm at the University of Minnesota.

We are recruiting a select group of undergraduates to conduct summer research with our faculty and graduate students. This program provides support and unique opportunities for undergraduate students. We strongly encourage applications from persons of under-represented minorities.

Many pressing questions currently face the scientific and policy communities regarding introduced species and genotypes. I invite you to review some of the critical research projects that you could help with as a summer researcher. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to prepare for graduate school or to polish your skills in preparation of a career in environmental science or policy. If you plan to graduate later than the summer of 2009 you are qualified to apply.

The program provides:
* Summer stipend of $4500 for the 10-week program
* Assistance for housing in the Twin Cities
* Assistance for travel
* Cutting-edge research experiences on invasive species and GMOs
* Training in risk analysis
* Collaborative research opportunities

To learn more about this summer opportunity and how to apply please visit our website. http://isg-igert.umn.edu/summer_undergrads/default.htm

Applications are due 15 February
Apply at http://isg-igert.umn.edu/summer_undergrads/undergrad_research.htm to the Life Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Programs or directly at: http://www.cbs.umn.edu/main/summer_research/ApplInstr.html

Be sure to indicate you are applying to the IGERT: Risk analysis for introduced species and genotypes program.

If you have questions, contact me (RNewman@umn.edu) or Susan Solarz at the
IGERT Program: ISGIGERT@umn.edu.

Our program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation as a part of their Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program. IGERT trains scientists and policy workers to address the global questions of the future.
Please do not hesitate to contact me or Susan for further information or

2009 Summer Internship Opportunities at QEM for TCUP Students
The deadline for students at TCUP grantee institutions to apply for ten-week science education-focused internships at the QEM Network in Washington, DC, is Friday, February 13. On-line copies of the application are available for download at http://qemnetwork.qem.org/tcup.htm#TCUPINTERN .

BENEFITS
Interns who successfully complete the ten-week internship will receive:

(1) a $3,000 stipend, payable in three installments during the internship;
(2) housing at George Washington University where other QEM summer interns
will be staying; and
(3) round-trip airfare and ground travel reimbursement.

During the internship, students will have an opportunity to interact with program officers at NSF and other federal agencies who are involved in making science policy; become knowledgeable about issues preventing American Indian and other minority groups from receiving a quality education, particularly in science and engineering. They also will become more knowledgeable about various health disparities that disproportionately affect American Indian and other minority groups; further develop their research, oral and written communication, and professional skills; visit a range of offices, museums, and other sites in the Washington area; and develop a peer network that includes students from across the country who are serving as summer interns in other QEM internship programs.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited Tribal College or University, and, must have successfully completed at least the freshman year by the start of the Program. Applicants also must be pursuing a degree in a science- or engineering-related field and be returning to a Tribal College the following academic year, except in the case of students who have completed their degree program at the Tribal College. In the latter case, such applicants must have been accepted into a four-year or graduate program that will begin in the fall.
