Public Meeting to Discuss Agenda Items for the Codex Task Force on Foods Derived From Biotechnology

WASHINGTON, Aug. 9, 2005 - The Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the Department of Health and Human Services today announced a public meeting to receive public comments on agenda items that will be discussed at the Fifth Session of the Codex ad hoc Intergovernmental Task Force on Foods Derived from Biotechnology (FBT) of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, which will be held in Chiba, Japan, Sept. 19-23, 2005.

The public meeting for comments will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tues., Aug. 30, 2005, in Room 107A, Jamie Whitten Building, 1400 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, DC.

Agenda items for the Fifth Session of the FBT include:
  • Review of the Work by International Organizations on the Evaluation of the Safety and Nutritional Aspects of Foods Derived from Biotechnology; and
  • Consideration of the Elaboration of Standards, Guidelines or other Texts for Foods Derived from Biotechnology.

Codex was created in 1963 by two United Nations organizations, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization. Codex develops food standards, guidelines and codes of practice in order to protect the health of consumers, ensure fair food trade practices and promote coordination of food standards undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations.
