The Artistic Expressions of the Great Lakes Indians continues with a presentation of clothing and accessories from the Noakes Collection. William Johnson, Ziibiwing Curator, will host a rare glimpse into a private collection from Tom Noakes of Canfield, Ohio. The objects on display will represent the Great Lakes Tribes of the Haudenosaunee/Iroquois, Ho-Chunk/Winnebago, Lenape/Delaware, Menominee, Mesquakie/Fox, Miami, Odawatomi/Potawatomi, Ojibway/Chippewa and Shawnee. The Ziibiwing Center and Exclusive Sponsor, Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. present the first of four Artist-in-Residence programs. This program focuses on Basketry and will be taught by Renee “Wasson” Dillard. Free and open to the public. Traditional dance is the oldest form of dance for men and women. The men’s traditional dance tells the story of creation, combat, and hunting. American Indian Dance: Men’s Grass & Women’s Jingle 12pm, 2pm & 4pm
Free and open to the public. Long ago, men’s grass dancers were responsible for preparing a ceremonial clearing through dance. This form of dance represents the movement of blowing grass. The women’s jingle dress was born from a young Ojibwe woman’s dream to heal her people. There are 365 tin or copper cones attached to the dress that represent each day of the year. Each cone is filled with a prayer, and as the cones “dance” the prayers are released. Call (989) 775-4750 for more information.

American Indian Dance: Men’s Fancy Feather & Women’s Fancy Shawl 12pm, 2pm & 4pm
Free and open to the public. Men’s fancy feather dancers are dressed in two multi-colored feather bustles around their neck and waste. Fancy dancers will amaze you with their high jumps, spins and fancy footwork. Women’s Fancy Shawl, also called the “Butterfly Dance”, began in the mid 20th century. Free and open to the public. The Hoop Dance creates and brings to life unique symbols and designs of nature, such as flowers, trees, animals, and birds. This style of dance visually shows our connection with the earth and all living things. Social Dances bring together people from all walks of life. The Two-Step or Rabbit Dance is a dance for couples. The Crow Hop honors the crow and the work it does to keep Mother Earth clean.             Eagle Feather Cleansing 1-6pm
Free and open to the public. Participate with member from the Anishinabe Ogitchedaw Veteran & Warrior Society, Eagle Clan, and Ziibiwing staff in cleaning and honoring the eagle feathers in the Ziibiwing Collection. You may also bring your own personal eagle feathers (or bird feathers) to clean and honor. Some restrictions may apply.

October 22
Eagle Feather Honoring 1-6pm
Free and open to the public. Honor and visit the eagle feathers in the Ziibiwing Collections. A bowl will be available to leave your semaa (tobacco) offering which will be placed in a sacred fire.

Spirit Feast 6-8pm
Free and open to the public. Come experience with us the Anishinabe ceremony that honors our ancestors and loved ones that have gone on before us. It is also a healing ceremony for those of us who are still grieving. This is a time to share the special food, photos, and stories of the one(s) who touched your life. November 9-13
Artist-In-Residence Workshop
The Ziibiwing Center and Exclusive Sponsor, Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. present the fourth and final Artist-in-Residence program for 2009. This program focuses on Beadwork and will be taught by Dr. Suzanne Cross. There are activities for classroom groups at the Center from 9am – 1pm and week long adult workshops in the evenings from 5:30pm – 8pm. The cost is $25/per person for the adult workshops. Anishinabe Santa is Coming to Town Again This Year! Santa’s getting his sled all duct-taped together and he’s coming to the Rez this month. Bring the kids to tell Anishinabe Santa their wish lists and get their picture taken with the “Big Guy.”

Free and open to the public. Students will perform dance styles and songs for family and friends at the Broadway Theatre, 216 E. Broadway, Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858. A reception will follow the performance.
