U.S. Department of Labor: Small Grassroots Organizations Connecting with the One-Stop Delivery System

The U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration (ETA) has announced two competitions for grants totaling $3.6 million for faith-based and community organizations to help members of hard-to-serve populations prepare for and succeed in employment.  The Grassroots Grant should provide services that focus on people who face major hurdles to employment, including welfare recipients, homeless individuals and ex-offenders.  Grantees will provide personalized care and supportive services, such as mentoring or life skills coaching, to enable individuals to fully use the services of local One-Stop Career Centers.  ETA expects to award 50 new $60,000 grassroots grants.  Faith- and community-based organizations are eligible to apply.  The full description of the purpose, requirements, eligibility, and additional information can be found in the April 5, 2007 edition of the Federal Register.  Applications must be submitted through Grants.Gov by May 8, 2007.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services: Mentoring Children of Prisoners (MCP) program

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families' (ACF) is accepting applications for the Mentoring Children of Prisoners (MCP) program.  This program supports the creation and maintenance of one-on-one mentoring relationships between children of incarcerated parents and caring, supportive adult mentors.  The intent of this program is to support the establishment or expansion and operation of mentoring programs, using a network of public and private community entities, in areas with substantial numbers of children of incarcerated parents.  The MCP program is designed to be a community-based mentoring program in which children and youth ages four up to age 18, are appropriately matched with an adult mentor, who has been screened and trained, for a one-on-one (one mentor/one youth), friendship-oriented (non curriculum-based) mentoring relationship.  ACF intends to make 1-103 awards of up to $100,000 per budget period.  Faith- and community-based organizations are eligible to apply.  Applications are due June 4, 2007.   View MCP solicitation information.
