ABA Center for Agricultural and Rural Banking Nearly 100 Years of Service to the Banking Industry
ABA has had a special section dedicated to providing advocacy, information, training, education, and public relations for banks that make and service agricultural loans or provide credit and other financial services to those living and working in rural America for nearly 100 years.
ABA established the Commission on Agriculture, a permanent commission of the association in 1913. In 1914, the Commission testified, for the first time, in support of the Smith-Lever Act, which created the U.S. Cooperative Extension Service. In 1913 the Commission began publishing The Banker-Farmer, which was ABA's official newsletter on agricultural and "country life" issues. In 1952, ABA hosted the first National Agricultural Bankers Conference, and has held an annual conference on agricultural banking issues every year since that time.
In November 1999, the ABA Board of Directors created the Center for Agricultural and Rural Banking in response to recommendations made by an ABA task force that developed a strategic plan for 21st century agricultural and rural banking.
