The WRC engages the public in activities to protect and improve water quality in Minnesota and beyond. We offer a broad array of water quality programming and materials dealing with topics of public concern, such as: agricultural best management practices; lakes, rivers, and wetlands; onsite sewage treatment; and youth and water resources.

Our programs put University expertise to use for the public good. We work through the University of Minnesota Extension to provide information and education for citizens, for water educators, and for policy makers. We are committed to building partnerships that enhance and expand our ability to protect the quality and value of our abundant water resources.

The Great Lakes Regional Water Program, a program of the USDA Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service, unites us with five Great Lakes Land Grant Universities engaging in water quality programming in national priority areas to make sure that clean, usable water is available to future generations.

The Great Lakes Regional Water Quality Program conducts water quality research, education, and public engagement addressing water issues common to the six states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. This further connects us with the USDA-CSREES National Integrated Water Quality Program.

Animal Waste Management

The USEPA estimates that there are 1.3 million farms bean field with livestock and poultry in the United States. Managing these farms to minimize excess nutrients, pathogens, and odors released into the environment is important to our natural resources and to human health. Our programs help farmers manage their animal waste in economically viable, environmentally responsible ways to prevent pollution and health risks.

Drinking Water and Human Health

Safe drinking water is at the heart of our concern about Minnesota's water resources. Our outreach programs aim to help citizens with questions regarding water that comes from their tap, and to protect surface water and ground water supplies that eventually become drinking water.
