Description: OCWD is seeking a hydrogeologist or engineer to join its team of groundwater professionals.  A key responsibility of this position is to perform groundwater modeling tasks, requiring knowledge of numerical computer methods, groundwater modeling codes, and understanding of hydrogeologic principles and practices in developing appropriate conceptual models of the aquifer systems being modeled.  Based on education and experience, the qualified candidate may be hired as a hydrogeologist, engineer, senior hydrogeologist, or senior engineer.  Benefits and salary schedule information available at www.ocwd.com.

Duties: Must be able to work with minimal supervision on groundwater modeling tasks as well as a variety of other groundwater related projects and investigations, such as seawater intrusion, groundwater flow path evaluations, production and injection well design, aquifer test analysis, stratigraphic correlations, and regional hydrogeologic assessments. Other job duties may include preparing specifications and contract documents for well construction projects and preparing convincing evaluations, reports, proposals and presentations with well-supported findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

Qualifications: Two to ten years of applicable experience preferred, with primary emphasis in groundwater modeling. Must have hands-on experience developing and implementing numerical groundwater flow models. BA/BS degree in engineering or geology required. MS degree in hydrogeology or civil engineering with an emphasis in groundwater hydrology and numerical modeling is preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.  A valid CA driver's license is required.

SENIOR HYDROGEOLOGIST / ASSOCIATE HYDROGEOLOGIST

The Monterey Peninsula Water Management District hopes to fill this position at the Senior Hydrogeologist level, but will also consider hiring at the advanced journey-level of Associate Hydrogeologist.

Associate Hydrgeologist - $5793-$6976/month
Senior Hydrogeologist - $6669-$8041/month

Duties include development of computer-based simulation models of ground-water and surface water resources, and development of model inputs including demands, flows, capacities and yields. The incumbent is also responsible for the operation and evaluation of hydrologic models to determine project yields, project impacts, resource capacity, water availability, reservoir operations, recharge and simulated flows, maintaining and modifying simulation models to reflect changes in the operating system or project conditions. This person will develop and manage ground-water exploration and hydrogeolgic assessment programs, providing geologic and hydrogeologic analysis and evaluation of similar
work by technical consultants. He or she will oversee the development and implementation of various District resources mitigation and management plans, participate in development of Environmental Impact Reports (EIRs) for District water-supply augmentation projects, and provide guidance and assistance on effective conjunctive use strategies for optimal management of surface and groundwater resources.

An Associate Hydrogeologist would not have the highest level responsibilities such as project planning / management or other supervisory functions, or be involved in the strategic planning process. A candidate hired at this level should be interested in advancing to the Senior Hydrogeologist position and becoming licensed.

Qualifications: Senior Level: Eight years or more of increasingly responsible hydrologic / hydrogeolgic research and analyses experience, including two years of administrative or lead supervisory responsibility, and the equivalent to a Bachelor's degree with major course work in geology, hydrology, environmental science, engineering, or a related field. A Master's degree in any of the above fields is preferred.

Associate Level: Five years or more of journey level hydrogeologist experience and the equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in one of the academic subject areas above.

In this role you will provide support for 8-10 groundwater extraction and treatment facilities required to operate 24/7. Support includes collection of routine environmental data necessary to evaluate system performance, general facility maintenance activities, coordination and oversight of contractors, and tracking routine functions.   • Collection of Routine Environmental Data - Collects the following parameters on a daily basis: flow rate, total gallons processed, differential pressure, water level, chemical inventory, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and redox potential. This work requires driving between locations and walking on uneven terrain.
  • General Facility Maintenance - Conducts minor maintenance activities, including cleaning of mechanical parts, replacing worn belts, general cleaning of facility, and tightening equipment.
  • Coordination and Oversight of Contractors - Analyzes data to schedule the exchange of media (ion exchange and granular activated carbon) and delivery of chemicals, coordinates with contractors providing media and chemicals, and oversees the delivery and exchange of these media and chemicals.
  • Tracking routine functions - Maintains tracking spreadsheets identifying frequency of well development, consumption of bag filters, and volumes of media disposed.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree and completion of wastewater collection system technician certification program (or equivalent certification program) and at least 2 years of experience collecting environmental samples (water, soil, and soil vapor) and using environmental field instruments, including flow meters, pressure guages, water level meters, flow through cells, pH/temperature/conductivity meters, DO meters, redox meters, and pressure transducers.
  • 40-hr HAZWOPR training with current annual 8-hr refreshers.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Valid California drivers license.
  • Requires U.S. Citizenship, U.S. Permanent Residency, or other status as a U.S. Person.

  1. Two years in the California state service as an Engineering Geologist, Range B; or

Four years of professional engineering geological experience outside of the State service, including two years of actual detailed field study applicable to the solution of groundwater, or civil engineering problems. (Professional experience is defined as experience equivalent to Engineering Geologist, Range B, gained after meeting the minimum qualifications for entry into the Engineering Geologist class.)

RANGE D. This range will apply to incumbents who meet the criteria for Range C and who possess a valid certificate of registration as a professional geologist or geophysicist issued by the California Board of Geologists and Geophysicists.

THE POSITION: An Engineering Geologist, Range A is the entry, and first working level in the class. Incumbents work under close supervision and perform less difficult engineering geologic work. Range B is the intermediate working level. Under general supervision, incumbents perform professional engineering geologic work of average difficulty. Range C is the full (non-registered) journey level. Under direction, incumbents perform difficult professional engineering geologic work. Incumbents may act as project managers on more complex projects or be assigned staff specialist responsibilities in support of project managers or other technical or programmatic functions. This level may also be used in a lead capacity over other Engineering Geologists or other professional or technical employees. Range D is the full (registered) journey level. ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS - Course work in engineering geology; willingness to travel in performing field work throughout the State; course work and/or experience in environmental engineering, water resource management, hydraulics, and/or hydrogeology; and in addition to registration as a geologist, certification as an engineering geologist or hydrogeologist. EXAMINATION INFORMATION: A candidate may be tested only once during any testing period. The testing periods are January 1 - June 30 and July 1 - December 31. Unsuccessful competitors who do not attain a minimum rating of 70.00% must wait at least 6 months from disqualification before reapplying. Successful competitors establish eligibility for 12 months and are restricted from re-competing during this 12 month eligibility period. The person in this position will ensure higher reliability of GSWC's utilization of groundwater in the areas where GSWC serves and at the same time, advance the GSWC's technical capability to the highest standard.

Accountability
The incumbent is accountable for defining the physical characteristics of the basins and aquifers where groundwater is extracted (water budgets, boundary conditions, aquifer properties, heads, aquifer chemistry, yields). This involves data collection and evaluation in order to develop the framework for additional analysis. The Senior Hydrogeologist is also accountable for determining strategic locations for water supply wells, to include, familiarity with local geology and the distribution of aquifers, for ensuring optimal utilization and conservation of the available water resources and for initiating and conducting hydrological studies and related activities concerned with water resources.

As Senior Hydrogeologist, the person in this position will assume some of the Water Resource Department's workload responsibilities and tasks as deemed necessary by the Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluates well losses and provides recommendations for preventative well maintenance to minimize lost well efficiency.
  • Assesses groundwater quality and quantity, and prepares long-term strategic plans to develop and optimally utilize the groundwater aquifers.
  • Proposes plans for water resources management and water sector improvement.
  • Conducts studies aimed at assisting decision makers in charge of water production and distribution in production planning and water conservation.
  • Conducts water resource studies, evaluating and modeling water supply issues.
  • Manages and analyzes data using relational database and GIS systems to analyze data and display results.

MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in geology, hydrogeology, engineering or related discipline required
  • State of California Professional Geologist registration
  • Required Experience
  • Five to seven years experience in hydrogeology with GIS and modeling experience.

Required Experience

  • Three to five years experience in geology or hydrogeology with modeling and extensive GIS experience.
  • The ability to develop and implement the water resource GIS system, perform hydrogeologic analysis and associated field work.
