Law Enforcement Division

Mission

To provide oversight in the development, delivery, and revision of Interior policies to ensure consistent standards and procedures are maintained throughout all Bureau law enforcement programs.

Organization

The Law Enforcement Division is composed of the Operations and Policy Analysis Branch; the Border Management and Drug Enforcement Branch; and the National Law Enforcement Training Office (NLETO).

The Operations and Policy Analysis Branch, the Border Management and Drug Enforcement Branch and NLETO are managed by a Supervisory Special Agent who reports to the Assistant Director of Law Enforcement.

Assistant Director of Law Enforcement

The Senior Law Enforcement Official with the responsibility for developing Interior law enforcement policy; directing and coordinating Interior wide drug, border and special enforcement activities; oversight of NLETO; providing liaison on law enforcement matters with other major Departments, State, local and tribal law enforcement entities ; and supervising Interior wide emergency and special law enforcement operations. 

Operations and Policy Analysis Branch

The Branch provides technical direction, and assistance in the development of bureau policies and plans for carrying out law enforcement programs. Staff provides technical assistance from a broad Interior-wide perspective and interprets policy for field implementation. The Branch Chief serves as the coordinator to the Office of the Solicitor – General Law for law enforcement policy.

In addition, the Branch Chief serves as the Interior coordinator for the deployment of law enforcement resources under the National Response Plan or other critical incidents/special operations.

Border Management and Drug Enforcement Branch

The Branch provides technical direction, and assistance in the development of bureau policies and plans for carrying out border management and drug enforcement functions.

The Branch Chief is responsible for oversight of Interior wide border coordination activities. This includes supervision of three field based border coordinators for the southwest, southeast, and northern borders. He/She serves as the primary point of contact with the Department of Homeland Security, Border and Transportation Security, Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol and other external partners.

In addition, the Branch Chief serves as the Interior coordinator to the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), the National High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) and oversees Interior wide drug enforcement functions.

National Law Enforcement Training Office

The National Law Enforcement Training Office, located at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Brunswick, Georgia, is responsible for developing and maintaining consistent Interior wide law enforcement training standards among all law enforcement programs.  NLETO provides oversight in the development, delivery, and revision of basic, advanced, and in-service training programs.  The office actively participates with the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and the Federal Law enforcement Training Accreditation Program to ensure the bureau law enforcement programs are designed, developed, conducted and evaluated using a systems approach to training.  The Chief of NLETO serves as the Interior representative to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.
