Mr. Adam C.
Melton of Searcy, Arkansas was a cooperative observer for the National Weather Service for
just over 45 years. He recorded daily high and low temperatures and measured rainfall,
with the rainfall total phoned into the weather service daily. Mr. Melton died in
September, 1996, but his contributions have not been forgotten. The John Campanius Holm
Award was bestowed on Mr. Melton posthumously on October 14, 1997. The award was presented
to his widow, Mrs. Juanita Melton. The Holm Award is the second highest honor given to
cooperative weather observers, with only a few observers receiving the award annually. The
award was named after a Lutheran minister who was the first person known to have
systematically taken weather observations in the American colonies in 1644 and 1645. |
Besides
being an outstanding observer, Mr. Melton was a storm spotter and loved to teach weather
at local schools. He was also a leader at his church and in his community, and was a
charter member of the Board of Directors of the Good Samaritans (who provide to those in
need). Said
Mr. David Evans, the Mayor of Searcy..."He was always volunteering his time and
energy to help this community and his fellow man in any way possible. I can think of no
person more deserving of the Holm Award than in the memory of Mr. Adam C. Melton." |
