Dutchman and the Rider, Hiram Woodruff Famous in the mid-nineteenth century, Dutchman defeated another great horse, Rattler, in four heats of three miles each. Dutchman also set the record for the three mile "time match" seven minutes and 32.5 seconds (7:32.5). Hiram Woodruff (1817-1867) rode Dutchman in setting the records. Son of a horse owner, Hiram won his first race at age 10, his first purse at 14 and his first time trial (18 miles in 57 minutes) at age 16. Woodruff has been called the first true champion of racing under saddle, but he is remembered for training, developing and driving trotters.
