Water And Riverine Systems Projects

Beaver Creek Water And Riverine Systems – Washington County, MD
Project Type: Construction of a “B” Stream Type and Habitat Restoration

The Beaver Creek Watershed Association awarded Environmental Services, Inc., (ESI) the contract for the design and construction of the Beaver Creek restoration near Hagerstown, Maryland in October 2004. Implementation of the restoration construction of Beaver Creek began and was completed in October 2005. As the sole contractor, ESI was responsible for all phases of design and construction including assisting the client with permitting, obtaining

approval of construction drawings, grade staking, clearing and grubbing, installation of erosion control measures, adjustments to the channel geomorphology, and installation of rock and log vane structures.

Beaver Creek is highly valued as a natural resource due to the discharge of the largest spring in Maryland which is approximately 3000 feet upstream of the restoration project. The project was supported by Washington County Soil and Water Conservation District, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Trout Unlimited, Federation of Fly Fishers, and Maryland Department of the Environment. The project required adjustments to the plan form and detailed excavation and grading of the longitudinal profile and hydraulic dimension of a 1700-foot reach of stream channel. The existing channel had been severely degraded due to a long history of agriculture and livestock access directly into the stream.

The restoration of the hydraulic geometry of the channel implemented concepts of natural channel design. Due to our design experience, the ESI construction crew under the direction of Dr. Jones made substantial added value engineering improvements in order to further improve trout habitat.
