Southern Miss to Celebrate AmeriCorps Week May 11-18

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Campus Link AmeriCorps, located at The University of Southern Mississippi, will join the national celebration of AmeriCorps Week May 11-18 with community service projects

Members serving at Southern Miss, Jackson State University, Millsaps College, Rust College, McLain’s Keys to Abundant Life Outreach and Poplarville School District will participate in a Life After AmeriCorps training for professional development and team building and in the Habitat for Humanity’s Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project on the Gulf Coast and in Hattiesburg at 11 Annie Christie Drive.

“We are proud to be part of AmeriCorps and grateful for the AmeriCorps members who are getting things done,” said Vickie Reed, program director at Southern Miss for the statewide Campus Link program. “Our AmeriCorps members have made a tremendous impact allowing us to extend our outreach and services by recruiting 820 community volunteers to work alongside them.”

Campus Link AmeriCorps at Southern Miss assists members statewide in establishing volunteer resource centers and promote disaster preparedness.

Since 1994, more than 540,000 men and women have joined the Americorps program nationwide and have served more than 705 million hours of service to their country.

AmeriCorps works with existing organizations to help increase community service participation. In 2007, the nation’s 75,000 AmeriCorps members recruited 1.7 million community volunteers to serve alongside them with an estimated 4,100 nonprofit, faith-based and community organizations across the country.

The Campus Link AmeriCorps program started in 1996 at the Institutions of Higher Learning and moved to the Center for Community and Civic Engagement in 2001 at Southern Miss. The statewide agency currently is recruiting and enrolling members for the 2008-09 program year to serve in 300- or 900-hour service term capacities. For more information, contact membership coordinator Jin Joo McClendon at 601.266.5189.
