WHEREAS, AmeriCorps service programs have proven to be a highly effective way to engage Marylanders of all ages and backgrounds in meeting a wide range of community needs and promote the ethic of service and volunteering since its creation in 1994; and
WHEREAS, Over the past year AmeriCorps has provided more than 1,400 individuals the opportunity to provide intensive, results-driven service to meet education, environmental, public safety and other pressing needs in communities across Maryland; and
WHEREAS, Since 1994, more than 10,000 Maryland residents have qualified for AmeriCorps Education Awards totaling more than $34,100,000; and
WHEREAS, Maryland has a reputation for excellence in leadership in the field of national service, having formed some of the first demonstration projects in the country; and
WHEREAS, AmeriCorps members, after their terms of service end, remain engaged in our communities as volunteers, teachers, public servants, and nonprofit leaders at the highest levels; and
WHEREAS, The Congressional AmeriCorps Week Resolution designates the week of May 11, 2008, as a time to salute AmeriCorps members for their work, thank community partners who make the program possible, and encourage more people to join.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MARTIN O’MALLEY, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND, do hereby proclaim MAY 11-18, 2008 as AMERICORPS WEEK in Maryland, and do commend this celebration to all of our citizens.
