Knowles Hall at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind

Project Type: Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Investigation

ESI performed an Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Investigation within Knowles Hall at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind on September 23, 2004. This was a follow up investigation to an initial survey performed on February 10, 2004. The purpose of the survey was to study the indoor environment of the facility to ensure that it was within comfort level for the building occupants and to make recommendations for any repairs to improve the air quality. According to our visual observations and air testing, there were no agents detected that would cause adverse health effects in any person under normal health conditions occupying this area. However, during our investigation, the visual inspection and sampling data obtained indicated some deficiencies in the HVAC system and building environment that warrant correction.

IAQ parameters including Carbon Dioxide, temperature, and relative humidity were compared with American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standards. The visual observations included inspection of the HVAC components such as supply vents, air handlers, blower fans, condensation pans and duct work; and, indicators of water intrusion and fungal growth. Airborne fungal concentrations collected in the residence indicated elevated spore concentrations in the 2nd floor west bedroom and the 1st floor office. It was determined that excessive fungal spore concentrations were a result the observed mold growth in the house.
