ATLANTA TO LAUNCH SOUTHEAST’S FIRST ZERO WASTE ZONE
Downtown Hotels and Restaurants to Work Together to Eliminate Waste
Atlanta – February 10, 2009 – It’s a fact that 82 percent of the materials disposed of in landfills are recoverable products, such as paper, organics and plastics.
In an effort to combat these statistics, Atlanta Recycles has partnered with the Green Foodservice Alliance, and is working in conjunction with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 4 and the Pollution Prevention Assistance Division of the Department of Natural Resources to launch the southeast’s first, and one of the nation’s first, Zero Waste Zones. EPA’s Response to the TVA Widows Creek Fossil Plant Gypsum Pond Release in Stevenson, Ala. - Updated January 29, 2009
EPA Region 4 received final results of its independent environmental sampling activities for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Widows Creek Fossil Plant gypsum pond release and has concluded its emergency response activities at the site. The concentrations of metals, solids and nutrients detected in samples drawn from the drinking water intake for Scottsboro, Alabama, along with samples collected from two locations in Widows Creek and three other locations in the Tennessee River, are below national primary drinking water standards and/or other health-based levels. Primary drinking water standards apply to public water systems for treated water and are conservative with respect to the protection of human health. Full Story
Agreement with Perdue Supports the Protection of Southeastern Waters
(ATLANTA – January 6, 2009) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Regions 3 and 4 announced an agreement today with Perdue Farms, Inc., to help poultry producers growing for Perdue protect our nation’s waters. The parties signed a Memorandum of Agreement to implement the Perdue Clean Waters Environmental Initiative, an effort to provide training, assessments and other assistance to reduce the environmental impact of poultry farms. EPA’s Response to the TVA Kingston Fossil Plant Fly Ash Release - Updated January 9, 2009
The local, state and federal agencies involved in the Unified Command responding to the TVA coal ash slide are preparing to transition from the formal unified command phase to ongoing recovery efforts with continued state oversight. The transition marks progress in the initial phases of cleanup at the site, and plans are in place to guide ongoing efforts.

Record Pollution Reduction Reached in the Southeast Due to Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Efforts
(Atlanta, GA – Dec. 4, 2008) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Region 4 enforcement program has reduced pollution by 1.2 billion pounds in fiscal year (FY) 2008, the highest annual pollutant reduction ever in the Southeast region. New Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Rule Effective May 27, 2008
On May 27, 2008, EPA’s Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Rule becomes effective. This new regulation contains DBE provisions affecting procurement actions under all EPA financial assistance agreements/grants awarded on or after May 27, 2008. EPA’s grant recipients, sub-recipients, and loan recipients (and the prime contractors of these three entities) are all subject to EPA’s DBE Rule and DBE Program requirements.
