This Mediterranean native grows well in a wide variety of soils as long as it has good drainage. It is sometimes called Jupiter’s beard. Red valerian has been used medicinally and as a potherb by some European cultures. It is hardy in USDA hardiness zones 5 through 8. You can find red valerian in the National Herb Garden.
