Archaeology Division - Highlighted Project Experience

TELFAIR PLANTATION, JASPER COUNTY, SC

Project Type: Phase III Data Recovery

Project Description: ESI conducted Phase III level investigations at 38JA175, an aspect of the historical Delta Plantation in Jasper County South Carolina. Delta Plantation, developed by the Cheves family, represents one of the largest and longest operating rice plantations on the Savannah River. Site 38JA175 represents a habitation of African Slaves beginning ca. 1830. Archaeological investigations located and explored the remains of three two-room structures first occupied in the 1830s. These archaeological and historical inquiries are rich with information on the daily lives of African slaves as well as the change in conditions and economic realities in the transition from slavery to post-bellum tenant and sharecropper life in the lowcountry.
