Sea Island Company Fuel System Closure for Upgrades - Sea Island, Glynn County, GA

Project Type: Tank Updgrades

Removal and Closure Assessment of approximate 55,000-gallon fuel system for this project. ESI performed an initial Phase I Environmental Site Assessment for the Sea Island Company’s Cloister compound and maintenance facility, which identified the storage and use of over 55,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline, diesel fuel, and kerosene as part of the Sea Island Company resort operation.  Redevelopment plans called for the excavation, removal, and closure assessment of the entire Sea Island Company fuel system for upgrades.

ESI and a Pollutant Storage Systems Specialty Contractor (PSSSC) conducted underground storage tank (UST) and aboveground storage tank (AST) removal and closure assessment of two (2) 1,000-gallon unleaded gasoline USTs, one (1) 250-gallon heating oil UST, one (1) 250-gallon propane UST, one (1) 20,000-gallon unleaded gasoline AST, one (1) 20,000-gallon diesel AST, two (2) 10,000-gallon diesel ASTs, and one (1) 2,000-gallon unleaded gasoline AST.

During fuel system closure, ESI conducted Interim Remedial Action (IRA) consisting of the excavation of 830 tons of petroleum-impacted soils for off-site disposal at an approved landfill facility.  Subsequent to confirmatory soil and groundwater assessment to confirm the effectiveness of the IRA, the excavations were resurfaced and the site restored for fuel system upgrades.
