Air permitting
Air quality permits are issued to industries and facilities that emit regulated pollutants to ensure that these emissions do not harm public health or cause significant deterioration in areas that presently have clean air. The permit also ensures that facilities make adequate provisions to control their emissions. The criteria for deciding if any new proposed facility or any change to an existing facility are contained in the Virginia regulations for the Control and Abatement of Air Pollution The seven DEQ regional offices perform permit application reviews, applicability determinations, and issue air permits based on the location of the facility.
The staff of Air Permit Programs is responsible for the administration of the air permitting programs in Virginia. This includes maintaining program statistics and reports, establishing guidelines, offering technical assistance, interpreting laws, regulations, policies and guidance as they relate to air permits.
Our responsibility is to the citizens of the Commonwealth, ensuring that all air permits are issued in a manner consistent with our mission to protect public health; to the regulated community, ensuring that regulatory standards are applied in a meaningful, fair and practical manner, and to the vibrant and precious natural resources of Virginia.
Our office provides information on air permitting, hazardous air pollutants, air pollution dispersion modeling, pollution control technology, and federal and state air pollution standards. Asbestos related questions should be directed to the Department of Labor and Industry.
