When you apply for items such as apartment leases, car loans, mortgages, and other major loans, you should direct any requests for verification of your salary/employment to:

WWW.THEWORKNUMBER.COM

This is a database-driven service providing automated employment and income verification for employees of the Department of Justice (except for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms).

What Types of Information Can Be Verified?

A "verifier" (an organization seeking employment verification and/or earnings information; such as a bank, a loan or credit institution, or a prospective employer) can obtain two types of information about you from the automated system:

Proof of Employment Only - (A Salary Key is not required)
  • Job title
  • Total time with the Department
Proof of Employment and Income - (A Salary Key is required)
  • Current rate of pay
  • Gross earnings for the year-to-date and the previous two years

How Do I Obtain a Salary Key?

To obtain a Salary Key on-line, follow these steps:

  1. Go to The Work Number web site (http://www.theworknumber.com).

  2. Select:  "Enter Employee Section"


  3. At the Employee's Login on the right of the screen, enter:  Employer Name (Department of Justice) or Employer Code (10563), click "Go"


  4. At the next screen, highlight and select:  (10563) U.S. Department of Justice, and click "Continue"


  5. Select the information you would like to provide a verifier (Proof of Employment ONLY, or Proof of Employment AND Income Verification)


  6. At the Employee Login, enter:  your Social Security Number (e.g., 123456789), tab and enter your:  PIN.  For first-time users, your initial PIN is your month and day of birth (e.g., 0815).  The first time you log on you will be prompted to change your PIN.  Your new PIN should be 8 numeric/alpha characters.   Please make a note of your new PIN and remember to keep it secure. Click "continue"


  7. At the main menu, select "Prove your income with a Salary Key"


  8. At "Create a Salary Key", read the important instructions and select: "Create a Salary Key".


  9. You may print and mail, or e-mail the salary key to a verifier.


  10. If you do not need another Salary Key, select:  Return to Main Menu from the bottom center of the page.


  11. If you need another Salary Key, select:  Create Another Salary Key

What Information Do I Give to the Verifier?

Give the following information to the verifier:

  1. Employer Name: Department of Justice
  2. your Salary Key (if required),
  3. your Social Security Number, and ask the verifier to go to www.theworknumber.com .
