Campground, Group Campground and Recreation Rental Fee Increase Proposals for 2009

The Forest Service is proposing between $2 and $4 increases in fees for camping in many campgrounds on the Tonasket Ranger District to help cover the steadily increasing cost of maintaining the facilities.

These fee increases were first proposed two years ago and the District has been collecting public comment and talking with visitors about the need for the increased fees. Fee proposal cannot be enacted until they are reviewed by the Pacific Northwest Recreation Resource Advisory Committee (RRAC). The RRAC is a citizen's advisory committee that makes recommendations on creating new or changing existing recreation fees managed by the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Oregon and Washington . The Pacific Northwest RRAC is authorized under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act, which was signed into law in December, 2004. Advice and recommendations from the RRAC is combined with other public notification and communication efforts to help the agencies make sound decisions regarding recreation fees.

“It has been over 10 years since the fees have been increased for most of the District campgrounds,” said Becki Heath, Forest Supervisor. The fees are retained on-forest, and are used to repair and improve campground facilities, to pump waste from toilets, and pay costs associated with recreation guard patrols and campground hosts.

The proposed fee increases apply to 9 campgrounds on the national forest. With the increase, fees will range from $8 to $12. The varying fees are based on services and amenities provided at the campground.

The Golden Age/Senior and Access passes, available for senior citizens and the disabled, entitle the bearer to half price camping at Forest Service campgrounds.
