Forestry - Arboricultural Assessments

Service Description

Trees are a valuable component of the urban environment, providing a broad suite of aesthetic, ecological, and economic benefits. An arboricultural assessment is a review of the structural and health conditions of individual trees, along with recommendations for remediation based on the goals for the project site. Depending on the specific site, the assessment and recommendations may be relative to:

  • future condition of the site, as in areas which are slated for development where trees will be cleared or retained
  • liability associated, as in public areas where visitors or property may be injured by falling debris
  • role of the tree in the larger ecosystem, as in areas where there are concerns about species diversity, or where a specific disease or insect outbreak is occurring

Arboricultural assessments require a site visit, where an arborist will visually inspect the tree. In rare circumstances the arborist may perform more intensive inspections, requiring ascent of the tree, theremoval of stem cores and similar techniques. Depending on the goals of the site, input from the landowner, land manager or project manger may be required to provide background information and more detailed information on objectives. Specific information on defects noted, a review of the tree’s general condition and management recommendations will be documented in a report supported by photographs.

ESI Capabilities

Our staff includes Certified Arborists (through the International Society of Arboriculture- ISA) and Certified Foresters (through the Society of American Foresters-SAF), as well as staff with educational backgrounds and/or experience in botany, tree physiology and urban forestry.

Arboricultural assessments are budgeted on either a per-tree or per acre basis. Reviewing an individual tree, or specific trees in a parking lot or along a public right-of-way, are usually bid on a per-tree basis and the prices are dependent upon the associated fixed costs (mileage, per diem, etc.). Large properties where an unknown number of trees will be reviewed are typically bid on a per-acre basis, typically one to three acres per arborist per day (site condition dependent).

Value to Clients

Arboricultural assessments are especially appropriate to clients who are dealing with county and municipal tree protection ordinances, where mitigation for clearing protected trees can be exempted due to health conditions. These assessments are also appropriate for landowners wishing to protect trees during clearing or landowners, including municipalities, wishing to improve the health of existing trees, or concerned about the liability risk to people or property.
