With the passage of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 and subsequent amendments, Congress mandated protection of those plant and animal species considered to be in danger of extinction. Since 1973, states have added lists of species in jeopardy within their borders, generally dividing them into categories of Endangered, Threatened, and of Special Concern depending on the fragility of their populations. An evaluation of a project’s potential effect on federal protected species must be conducted whenever a Section 404 permit is requested from the ACOE. ESI is experienced in coordinating studies of Endangered and Threatened species. ESI regularly coordinates with the USFWS and the WRC, DNR and Water Management Districts. We regularly perform field surveys to document the presence or absence of potential habitat and conduct surveys for protected species and, if they are determined to be present, can guide our clients in meeting legal requirements of habitat use in these areas.
