The Learn & Serve Challenge, October 6-12, 2008, is a concentrated week of special events spotlighting service-learning successes around the country in order to build awareness of the value of students’ contributions to their communities; spread effective service-learning practices; and inspire other schools and communities to launch their own service-learning programs and projects.
Presented each year by the National Service-Learning Partnership in cooperation with the Corporation and numerous other youth-serving organizations, the 2008 Challenge is expected to bring together more than 50,000 young people, educators, business leaders, and community partners to shine a spotlight on the ways youth are translating what they learn in the classroom into action to improve their own lives and communities. This year’s event has drawn the support of a dozen governors, who have issued proclamations supporting service-learning.
The Challenge supports the federal goal to engage 5 million college students serving and ensure that 50 percent of America’s K-12 schools incorporate service-learning into their curricula by 2010.
