Forestry - Natural Disaster Assessments

In the southeastern United States, wood and fiber products are significant contributors to the economy and one of the largest components of agricultural industries. However, due to the location of the southeastern states and the influence of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico on weather patterns, the timber industry has to be prepared for and deal with natural disasters, such as hurricanes and wildfires. After hurricanes and wildfires, it is very important for state, private and industrial landowners to assess the timber loss and prepare plans to remove the damaged wood in a timely manner to reduce additional wildfire risk and the spread of disease. ESI foresters are experienced in hurricane and wildfire timber damage assessments and can estimate future lost revenue and provide landowners with specific recommendations to maintain the health of a timber stand after hurricane or wildfire damage.

Hurricanes can also cause extensive damage to urban tree canopy (urban forests) within communities and municipalities. This damage can result in the loss of ecological, economic and aesthetic value. After a hurricane, it is important for communities to assess hurricane damage within the urban forests to determine safety risks and potential tree damage. ESI can provide the following services to assist communities after a hurricane: inventory assessment to determine canopy loss from hurricane, reforestation recommendations and plans, identification of new tree planting areas, exotic/invasive species removal plans and the preparation of educational programs and material for the residents of the communities.
