Overview
Worldbike promotes the bicycle for human development- to deliver economic, health and environmental impact. Worldbike has for a decade led the field in developing appropriate bicycle technology for low-resource settings, and is now focused on proving the economic value of bicycles in development. Worldbike has worked in Kenya, South Africa, Nicaragua and Senegal over the course of its first decade of work, and is poised for significant growth. The work of the organization impacts lives on the streets of developing nations, has influenced industry giants, is on display at the Bicycle Museum of America, and was in the Cooper-Hewitt Museum exhibit “Design for the Other 90%.” Today, the organization has partnered with UN Habitat to deploy bicycles to haul trash in Kibera, Kenya the second largest slum in Africa.


Leadership Position
Worldbike is seeking a leader with a proven track record, love of growing organizations and strong commitment to mission-driven enterprise. Worldbike’s new leader will refine and implement Worldbike’s vision, making bicycles a pivotal part of development projects worldwide. The Executive Director will build a team and mentor staff in the US and our field site in Kenya, support a base of volunteers for current and future programs, and seek out funding and resources to support the growth of the organization.

Experience working as a leader in a successful growing organization; Fundraising; Board and staff development, and a commitment to development issues are essential. This is a full-time position hosted at Xtracycle in Oakland, CA.

Key Responsibilities
• Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with development agencies and bicycle industry leaders
• Identifies, mobilizes and manages the resources necessary to accomplish the goals of the organization – supports Board to achieve fundraising goals
• Ensures fiduciary responsibility, sound financial management and financial accountability for all contributions, income and assets
• Develops a process for planning, implementing and evaluating short and long-range goals for the agency
• Oversees staff and develops an effective volunteer program, including recruiting, training, and supervision
• Negotiates contracts and grants
• Provides the Board with adequate information to help members reach sound decisions and establish policies
• Provides support, education and leadership to the Board to assist them in their roles and responsibilities.


Additional Qualifications:


Requirements
• 5+ years successful experience in a senior management role in a private, nonprofit or public sector organization
• Proven track record in fund and resource mobilization from corporations, major donors and foundations
• Experience working with and supporting a nonprofit Board of Directors.
• Ability to conceptualize, communicate and lead the organization from bold vision to clear implementation
• Advanced understanding of, experience in, and commitment to achieving sustainable and measurable development impacts in low-resource settings.


Preferred Skills
• MBA or equivalent
• Previous responsibility for developing and managing a budget of $1M or greater
• Strong written and oral communication
• Understanding of and commitment to development issues and transportation
• Enthusiastic team player with a demonstrated ability to draw the best from a diverse set of stakeholders
• Experience working in a developing country
• Experience with designing and/or managing social impact measuring systems.
• Ability to work with people from diverse cultural, religious, educational and vocational backgrounds
• Ability to travel 30% of the time as needed
