For more than 38 years in Russia, Raisa Shmilevich taught English to Russian schoolchildren. Now Raisa is a resident of New York City and a Senior Companion. She helps recently arrived elderly Russian immigrants cope with life in a new land, including adjusting to a new language and new customs. Drawing from her teaching experience, Raisa developed English lessons for each member of the families she serves. Recently, she joined with other Senior Companions to help two families acquire housing that was fully accessible for their children with disabilities and then helped them move in and get organized. Says one of the beneficiaries, "You have given us windows to the world." |
