When Joyce Keeler found herself with time on her hands after retiring as a nurse several years ago, she signed on as an RSVP volunteer and a member of the "SWAT Team" with the Johnson County Volunteer Center in Overland Park, Kansas. The SWAT Team matches potential volunteers with short-term projects for a variety of service organizations. Serving with numerous projects gave Keeler the chance to get to know a dozen groups. A lover of reading, she eventually settled on regular volunteering with two: the Johnson County Public Library and Reach Out and Read Kansas City. She is now president of the Friends of the Library and helps run the used book store, which raises money for the library system. With Reach Out and Read Kansas City, she undertakes a variety of supporting roles for the organization that provides volunteers to read to children who are awaiting medical appointments in local clinics. Her efforts with the organization earned her the Dr. Seuss Volunteer of the Year Award in 2003. "Nobody needs to sit and be unproductive or unhappy," she says of her service. "Volunteering is the answer for a lot of ills." |
