First Round of ’08 AmeriCorps Funding Supports 43,000 New Members, 261 Organizations to Tackle Education and Social Challenges (TABLE)

Washington D.C. – The Corporation for National and Community Service today announced the winners of the first round of AmeriCorps 2008 Grant Awards, 261 national and local organizations in their second or third year of funding who will receive $151 million to support 43,228 AmeriCorps members. These members, in turn are eligible to receive more than $130 million in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards when they complete their service.  (Click here to read the press release.)

AmeriCorps grants are made in two general categories: “state grants” made either to Governor-appointed state service commissions or to organizations nominated by those commissions; and “national grants” made directly by the Corporation to organizations operating in multiple states, institutions of higher education, and American Indian tribes.

AmeriCorps State Continuation Grants

A total of $98,519,743 in AmeriCorps State Continuation grants will go to 199 organizations. These grants will support 15,286 AmeriCorps members who collectively can earn up to $44,932,435 in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards after completing their service.

AmeriCorps State Competitive Continuation Grants: These 180 grants are awarded to organizations nominated to participate in a nationwide competition by Governor-appointed state service commissions. A total of $96,848,350 will be awarded in this category to support 13,640 members who could earn up to $42,068,849 in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards.

AmeriCorps State Education Award Program (EAP) Continuation Grants: Under this program, organizations operating in a single state receive a small administrative grant - approximately $600 for each full-time member - and most use their own or other resources to cover AmeriCorps members’ living allowance and other program costs. Fourteen grants totaling $300,190 will support 1,510 members who could earn up to $2,372,186 in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards.

AmeriCorps for States and Territories without State Commissions Continuation Grants: The five grants in this category total $1,371,203 to support 136 members serving in South Dakota, Puerto Rico, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Members could earn up to $491,400 in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards.

AmeriCorps National Continuation Grants

A total of $53,187,558 in AmeriCorps National Continuation grants will go to 62 organizations in the four categories listed below. These grants will support 27,942 AmeriCorps members who collectively can earn up to $85,929,843 in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards after completing their service.

AmeriCorps National Education Award Program (EAP) - Continuation Grants: Under this program, organizations operating in more than one state, or institutions of higher education, receive a small administrative grant—approximately $600 for each full-time member—and most use their own or other resources to cover AmeriCorps members’ living allowance and other program costs. Sixteen grants totaling $3,246,790 will support 14,457 members who could earn up to $36,418,930 in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards.
