Imagining Gallery

The ability to imagine--to reach beyond what is known--lies at the heart of human creativity. Our imagination allows us to solve practical problems, confront challenges, and create works of art for our own delight and wonder.

The Smithsonian Insitution's art museums collect, preserve, and display thousands of objects celebrating the imagination. They carry out research in art history and conduct outreach programs that teach us about our aesthetic heritage and enrich our cultural life. Art works have been an important part of the Institution's collections since its founding in 1846.

The Smithsonian's museums contain treasures from a wide range of places and time periods. The artists who created the pieces exhibited here worked within the conventions alive in their cultures. But they also reshaped and reached beyond the traditions they knew in order to communicate their ideas more compellingly.
