About HMRS
Image from the Old Healthy School Meals Web Site
In 1995, the USDA established Team Nutrition, a nationwide integrated program designed to help implement the School Meals Initiative for Healthy Children.
In cooperation with the Department of Nutrition and Food Science at the University of Maryland, the USDA's Food and Nutrition Information Center has developed the Healthy Meals Resource System (HMRS) as the training and technical assistance component of Team Nutrition. For more information, view:
Mission
  • Provide access to resources and training materials for Child Nutrition personnel in a timely manner
  • Facilitate dissemination of pertinent information
  • Provide a conduit for industry and professional groups working in Child Nutrition Programs
  • Aid in the collection and sharing of State and local resource
HMRS Web Site and Database
The HMRS Web site includes the Education and Training Materials Database, a searchable collection of training materials for school nutrition personnel; several online discussion groups for specific target audiences; and food safety information. Special categories of interest to school food service personnel provide added resources of mutual benefit. These include the Directory of Chefs, a cooperative program where chefs and school personnel are working together, industry partnerships with USDA that provide for cooperative efforts, and software vendors for nutrient analysis.
Training and Technical Assistance Component
The Healthy Meals Resource System, as USDA's Training and Technical Assistance Component, assists state and local school food service and child care programs in meeting the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. By using this Resource System, child care providers and school nutrition personnel and trainers can easily locate appropriate and useful training materials available for loan from the collection of the National Agricultural Library.
National Agricultural Library

The National Agricultural Library collection includes many Child Nutrition publications from USDA/Food and Nutrition Service, Regions, States, NET products, Team Nutrition grantees, Cooperative Extension, materials from Institutions such as NFSMI, SNA, Associations, Universities and commercial products.

The NAL Catalog, AGRICOLA (AGRICultural OnLine Access) is the searchable database of bibliographic records created by the National Agricultural Library.
