Roanoke, VA - A convicted sex offender
recently profiled by the Virginia State Police and the U.S. Marshals Service
on WSLS-TV’s weekly segment “10’s Most Wanted” was arrested without incident
in the 800 block of Day Avenue in Roanoke Wednesday evening. George Raymond
Howett, 43, of Roanoke had spent the past twenty years incarcerated in the
Virginia Department of Corrections before being released on probation in
January of this year. Howett was subject to intense monitoring by the
Virginia Probation and Parole division, including being monitored by a
tracking device and attending mandatory counseling, however, Howett removed
the tracking monitor and fled Roanoke around October 10. The Virginia State
Police obtained felony warrants for his arrest.
The Virginia State Police and the U.S. Marshals
Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force (CARFTF) based in Roanoke
conducted a joint-investigation to locate Howett. On October 23, Howett was
profiled by WSLS-TV 10 in Roanoke and the U.S. Marshals as the Fugitive of
the Week which prompted numerous calls from the public providing substantial
leads to his whereabouts. On November 12, information was garnered that
Howett would be returning to the Day Avenue area of Roanoke.
At approximately 6:15 pm, Task Force Officers
observed Howett exiting a vehicle in the 800 block of Day Avenue and placed
him under arrest without incident. Howett was incarcerated in the Roanoke
City Jail pending an appearance on the outstanding felony warrants. The U.S.
Marshals Service is also conducting an investigation as to whether Howett
violated federal laws under the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act
which was enacted by Congress in 2006 making some aspects of sex offender
violations a federal offense.
