State of Michigan Escapee Captured after 32 Years on the Run

Grand Rapids, MI - The old adage “You can run, but you can’t hide” finally caught up with Susan Lefevre. Lefevre was sentenced in Saginaw County, MI on 02/27/1975 to a prison term of 10-20 years for conspiracy to violate drug laws and violation of drug laws (MCL 335.341). Lefevre served approximately one year at the Women’s Division, Detroit House of Corrections (currently the Robert Scott Correctional Facility) in Plymouth, MI. She walked away from the prison on 02/26/1976. She was charged with Escape and a warrant was issued by the State of Michigan on 02/27/1976.

The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) Absconder Recovery Unit received an anonymous tip in late March of 2008 that suggested that Lefevre may be living in California under the name Marie Walsh. The MDOC asked the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) for assistance, and a joint fugitive investigation was conducted. A copy of Marie Walsh’s thumb print was obtained from her California driver’s license and was compared to the prints on file for Lefevre by the Michigan State Police Crime Lab. The thumbprints were a perfect match. Marshals Service Deputies arrested Lefevre on 04/24/2008 at her home in Del Mar, California.

Lefevre was leading a normal life in a San Diego suburb with a husband and two children as Marie Walsh. She was living in a nice house in an affluent neighborhood. Lefevre initially denied her true identity but finally admitted who she was after being confronted with the photographs and fingerprint evidence. Lefevre told the Marshals after her arrest that her husband and children had no idea about her criminal past and escape from prison in Michigan.

Lefevre is currently housed at the Las Colinas Women’s Detention Center in San Diego, CA, awaiting extradition back to Michigan to serve out the remainder of her State sentence.
