Operation Intercept Apprehends Maryland Homicide Suspect

COLUMBIA- John Walter Wynn was arrested without incident Monday night in Conway. Wynn, 41, was the subject of a February 2006 Prince George County (Maryland) warrant for murder. Wynn is alleged to have shot his female victim multiple times before fleeing Maryland and eventually landing in Conway. He had been a fugitive for over two years.

Wynn was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center in Conway awaiting extradition proceedings. In announcing the arrest, United States Marshal Johnny Mack Brown said, “It is very gratifying to apprehend someone who has been on the run for so long. He was able to evade capture for over two years, but now Wynn will have to answer his charges in Maryland.”

Established in 1789, the United States Marshals Service is the nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agency. In fiscal 2007, the Marshals arrested more than 36,000 federal fugitives, clearing 38,900 felony warrants. Marshals Service-led task forces like South Carolina’s Operation Intercept arrested 46,800 state and local fugitives, clearing 58,663 state and local fugitives clearing 70,329 felony warrants. Locally, Operation Intercept arrested over 2,500 South Carolina fugitives during that same period.
