Man Wanted by Roanoke Police Located in New Jersey;
Commits Suicide as Marshals Close In
 
Camden, New Jersey - A New Jersey man wanted by the Roanoke Police Department for Eluding Police, Failure to Appear in Court and being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm was located on Tuesday, January 8, at his mother’s residence at 103 South 35th Street in Camden by members of the U.S. Marshals New York - New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force following a lead from the U.S. Marshals office in Roanoke.

Phillip Carl Martin, 37, of Camden was located in an upstairs bedroom at approximately 6:30 am by task force officers. When the officers reached the top of the stairs, they observed Martin reaching for a handgun. The officers retreated to a secure position and evacuated other family members from the residence. After hearing a single gun shot, a SWAT team from the Camden City Police Department responded to assist. SWAT officers entered the residence and discovered Martin dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. No citizens or officers were injured and the crime scene was released to the Camden County Prosecutors Office for investigation.
