Scholarships Available for Engineering Talent in Every County (E-TEC)

Engineering Talent in Every County

2/12/2009

AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa State University College of Engineering is offering a $500 Engineering Talent in Every County (E-TEC) scholarship to high school seniors and transfer students from across Iowa who have declared engineering as their program of study at Iowa State. Approximately 70 E-TEC scholarships will be awarded each year.

To be eligible, students must be Iowa residents and U.S. citizens, and demonstrate potential to succeed, according to Monica Bruning, talent expansion director for the College of Engineering.

They also must complete the E-TEC online application, which includes a creative component, Bruning said. The creative component asks students to use the medium of their choice to create an artifact (product) to illustrate an engineering challenge that they see in their community, county, state, nation and/or world and explain how they might work as an engineer in the future to address this challenge.

“These artifacts will build upon Iowa State University College of Engineering’s 2050 Challenge initiative and may be used by the college to further promote this initiative,” Bruning said.

The deadline for submitting the E-TEC online application is March 15. The application, along with complete details about the scholarship and application process, can be found at http://www.engineering.iastate.edu/etec.html.

The E-TEC scholarship program focuses on improving engineering career awareness statewide, added Jay Staker, program director for ISU Extension Science, Engineering and Technology, which provides science and technology education for Iowa youth. ISU Extension is a partner in this initiative with the College of Engineering and the National Science Foundation.
