Purpose: This workshop will focus on the research needed to implement ORD's Framework for Assessing the Public Health Impacts of Risk Management Decisions, which describes the assumption that the development and validation of indicators to assess public health impacts of risk management is rooted in understanding linkages in the source-to-exposure-to-effect paradigm. This workshop will attempt to identify, design, and prioritize research to test this assumption and provide principles for use by the Agency to evaluate the effectiveness of its regulatory program. This workshop will result in:
  1. recommendations for several research areas that fit ORD’s capabilities to evaluate the public health impacts of risk management decisions;
  2. information needed to develop an implementation plan for conducting the needed research within ORD.

This two-day workshop will provide participants with background information during a plenary session on January 22 and will address a series of charge questions in parallel break-out sessions on January 23. Some topics to be addressed during the plenary include: an overview of the framework document and the Report on the Environment; connections between public health and ecosystem services; lessons learned from ecological monitoring on indicator development and application; linking source to exposure and exposure to effects; CDC’s Environmental Public Health Tracking Program; and ORD's pilot accountability projects. Additionally, STAR grantees recently funded to develop public health outcome indicators will present their research plans during a poster session on January 22.

This meeting will be open to the public on January 22, however space will be limited. Participation on January 23 is by invitation only.

Day 1 of this meeting will be accessible via webcast through EPA's Science Connector (check back for additional details)
