USDA TO DONATE AGRICULTURAL COMMODITIES FOR SCHOOL FEEDING IN BOLIVIA

WASHINGTON, Oct. 5, 2004 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture today announced that it will donate 1,380 metric tons of various commodities to Project Concern International (PCI), a private voluntary organization, for primary school children in Bolivia.

The commodities include 800 tons of wheat flour, 280 tons of wheat-soy blend, 180 tons of vegetable oil and 120 tons of lentils. The USDA assistance package for the project is valued at around $3.0 million.

PCI will provide a daily breakfast to about 100,000 primary school children in the Altiplano region of Bolivia during the eight-month school year, which runs from March to November. In addition, PCI will implement parent and teacher training programs to improve the quality of education, as well as a health promotion program to improve the health and nutrition of participating school children.

The donation will be made under the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program, administered by the Foreign Agricultural Service. The McGovern-Dole program provides for USDA donations of agricultural commodities to promote education, child development and food security for some of the world’s poorest children. USDA provided 66,200 tons of U.S. commodities to 13 countries under fiscal year 2004 McGovern-Dole donation agreements.
