Release 8: Now Here!

2008.08.25 — 11:00 CT

The Lotus Notes Team has upgraded all mail servers to Domino Release 8.0.2. In the coming weeks, users will be asked to upgrade their Lotus Notes Clients to Release 8, but for those that wish to upgrade early, the new software can be downloaded from Here.

The new release has several feature changes, the largest being a new look and feel. A new sidebar feature adds built-in Sametime Instant Messaging functionality, a Day-at-a-Glance calendar view, and a RSS feed reader all from the main view. For more info on the new features please see our Quick Guides page.

REMINDER: Blocked E-mail Attachments

2008.02.19 — 13:30 CT

Effective August 18, 2004, Information Services expanded the list of blocked attachments types on the Lotus Notes and Unlserve e-mail servers. With e-mail attachments continuing to be a primary method for viruses being introduced to campus, we have expanded the number of attachment types blocked to include: .ade, .adp, .bas, .bat, .chm, .cmd, .com, .cpl, .crt, .exe, .hlp, .hta, .ins, .inf, .isp, .js, .jse, .lnk, .mda, .mde, .mdz, .msc, .msi, .msp, .mst, .pcd, .pif, .reg, .scr, .sct, .shs, .url, .vb, .vbe, .vbs, .wsc, .wsf, .wsh. This also includes .zip files that contain any of the previously mentioned extensions.

For users that need to send files of this type, the best alternative is to utilize UNL DropBox.

SMTP-Auth Implemented at UNL

2007.12.17 — 15:00 CT

What is SMTP-Auth?

SMTP-Auth is an extension of the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) to include an authentication step through which the client effectively logs in to the mail server during the process of sending mail.

Who should use SMTP-Auth?

All UNL Lotus Notes users that access mail using a program other than the Lotus Notes Full client software should use the SMTP-Auth server settings for their outgoing mail. This includes those using Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail (Vista), Mac Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, etc.

For more information on using SMTP-Auth please refer to the SMTP-Auth settings page.

Attachment Restriction for Lotus Notes

2007.11.12 — 08:25 CT

The attachment limit on Lotus Notes servers is now 100 MB. This is being done as part of an overall process to increase productivity and reliability for all users of e-mail at UNL. For users that need to send files that are larger than the 100 MB limit, the best alternative is to utilize UNL DropBox. This is a free service offered by Information Services that allows you to upload a file and in return get a link that can be pasted into a message. The recipient then just has to click the link to begin downloading the file.
