Training
Fire training is more than the means by which firefighters learn the skills and tactics associated with fire management. Wildland fire training addresses intangibles like interagency cooperation, leadership, and decision-making. Common training—regardless of a firefighter’s affiliation—is critical in creating and sustaining a true interagency fire management environment.

NIFC’s fire training group serves all wildland fire management agencies by developing training courses and curriculum, conducting training, and providing training assistance to local, state and federal government partners, universities, and foreign governments. Fire training staff oversees the development of new courses from start to finish, and certify courses for adherence to National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards. They also develop professional audio-visual materials to enhance training, and they increase the effectiveness of course offerings through distance learning technology.
