Buffers for Wildlife Project

Updated 05/28/2008

The Buffers Initiative has great potential to help American farmers, ranchers and other private landowners protect their soil, enhance water quality and provide wildlife habitat. The Buffers for Wildlife project was a joint effort by Wildlife Management Institute and NRCS' Watershed Science Institute and Wildlife Team.
The objective of the project was to assist one state in each NRCS Region to develop wildlife friendly jobsheets for selected buffer practices. The six states that volunteered for the pilot were Maryland, North Carolina, Illinois, Texas, South Dakota and Utah. The State Conservationists and the Directors of the respective state wildlife agencies selected staff members to participate in facilitated workshops leading to job sheets that contained the agreed-to content. The Wildlife Management Institute provided the facilitators of the workshops and the WHMI and WSSI provided a coordinator to assist the states with the development of a final product.

Keeping with NRCS' "Locally Led" concept each state addressed the challenge differently. This was a necessity because of ecological differences that planners face when developing wildlife habitat across all regions of the United States. Our hope is that the diversity among the final products, developed by each state, will provide choices and templates for State Biologists and others.

The participants in this effort received the Wildlife Management Institute's prestigious Touchstone Award at the 65th North American Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference on March 28, 2000.
