Current Research

  • Creating taper-based compatible volume and biomass estimation systems.
  • Assessing the quality of FIA estimates as they relate to measurement, prediction, non-response, and sampling errors.
  • Reporting the current and past forest resources of Michigan based on FIA plot measurements and other ancillary data.
  • Developing a national system for the classification of forest types and stocking.

Why is This Important

The information collected by FIA is used by government agencies, forest industries, researchers and environmental groups in many of the decisions they make. Information about the quality, accuraccy and bias of FIA estimates is crucial to our data users.

Future Research

Improving extensive inventory-based estimates for small areas and mapping of resource information through the use of remote sensing and model based estimation. Improving and implementing reporting techniques for forest inventory information through the use of Web-based products.
