Dana Palmer, Elaine Noble & Bernadine Wiesen were presented with a "Team Programming Award" at the NYS Assoc of CCE 4-H Educators annual meeting on October 16, 2008 for their work in creating PAWSitively Youth.
Dr. Ari van Tienhoven, Professor Emeritus of Animal Science at Cornell, was honored recently when his paper on "The effect of sulfamethazine feeding on the thyroids, combs and testes of Single Comb White Leghorn Cockerels. (1956)" was selected by the Poultry Science Association as one of the top five landmark papers in poultry science over the last century.
Jeremy Weaver, grad student, has been selected as the recipient of the 2008 Maynard Award. The award be presented at the 2008 Cornell Nutrition Conference.
Rick Watters, PhD student, has been awarded a National Mastitis Research Foundation scholarship to attend the NMC 48th Annual Meeting in Charlotte, N.C. in January.
Falling leaves, oncoming winter and a wealth of activities. For many in the department, the fall months of October and November are packed with conferences, classes and outreach programs, and Dr. Mike Baker’s schedule is no exception. Dr. Baker serves as the Beef Cattle Extension Specialist for the Department of Animal Science and he works to support the county extension field staff in delivering educational programs like the Value Discovery Program, Empire Health Development Program, the biannual Beef Tour and the Hoof to Rail Program, to use research based knowledge in order to improve the sustainability of New York State’s beef industry.
This October, Dr. Baker organized the Tenth Biannual Beef Tour to various points of interest in Pennsylvania. Interested parties in the beef industry had the opportunity to tour three to four facilities each day, including a grass-finishing farm, a group of beef operations that collectively market their cattle to regional supermarket chain, Weiss, and a Herr feedlot where vegetable byproducts in the form of waste potato chips ... Congratulations to Dr. Robert Blake, who has accepted the position of Director of the Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies at Michigan State University, starting in April, 2009. In addition to being Director of the Center, he will also hold an appointment in the Department of Animal Science. Bob will be departing after nearly 23 years of dedicated service, research and teaching in both the Animal Science Department and the International Agriculture Program at Cornell. We wish Bob and his family well, but we will miss them greatly.
Bob Foote, the Cornell University scientist whose research led to in vitro fertilization in livestock, animal cloning and a discovery that female mammals are born with a finite inventory of eggs, died Oct. 27. Read more
