Rural Development - Multi-Family Housing Program

Multi-Family Housing Program

2008 Highlights

Farm Labor Housing     $30.9 million

Guaranteed Rental       $23.2 million

Rental Housing Loans     $6 million
Preservation Grants            $509,060

Rental Assistance         $27.5 million

Home ownership is desired by a growing number of Californians, but due to limited incomes, rising real estate prices and other factors, some rural residents are renters. In 2008, USDA Rural Development invested over $97 million in multi-family housing programs to help rural renters of all types.

Rural Development’s portfolio of rental assistance includes Rural Rental Housing Loans to finance the construction of rental housing for low- and moderate-income individuals and families and cooperative housing for elderly or disabled residents. We also award Housing Preservation Grants to provide assistance to rural communities to improve and modernize housing standards.  USDA Rural Development provides Rental Assistance, which enables low-income tenants to pay no more than 30 percent of their income for rent.

One of our important missions is support of affordable, modern farmworker housing. In fiscal 2008, over $30.9 million in loans and grants was invested to help ensure hundreds of farmworkers and their families had access to safe, affordable housing.

Wherever the need exists for affordable rental housing, Rural Development in California will play a major role to help low-income tenants and their families.
