The design of the Gateway Arch was choosen out of 172 submissions in a nationwide contest during 1947-1948.
Construction began in 1963 an the Monument was completed in 1965.
The Arch has a stainless steel exterior and is 192 meters (630 feet) tall.
The distance from leg to leg at ground level is also 192 meters (630 feet).
A capsule takes visitors to the top of the Arch offering a great view of St. Louis.
An average of 4 million people visit the Arch each year.
The Arch is located in Central St. Louis near the Mississippi river and is the part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial.
This Memorial also includes the Museum of Westward Expansion and the St. Louis' Old Courthouse
