Project ID: P/ANL--000471
Project Title: Materials Science: Magnetic Thin Films
Project Description: The goals of this program are to synthesize, characterize and study physicaland metallurgical properties of magnetic films, including artificiallylayered superlattices, sandwiches, wedges, ultrathin films, surfaces,high-energy-product permanent magnet films and other magnetic nanostructuresand heterostructures in confined geometries. Argonne explores modificationsof materials properties as a function of preparation conditions and filmthickness. Films are grown via sputtering and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE).Argonne explores spring magnet heterostructures, permanent magnet films, giant magnetoresistive (GMR) materials, magneto-optic films, and magneticheterostructures formed with superconductors, insulators andantiferromagnets. Argonne uses the surface magneto-optic Kerr effect (SMOKE)and synchrotron radiation as probes of magnetic films, and operate Brillouinand Raman scattering facilities. Basic magnetization, magnetotransport, andmagneto-optic mechanisms and phenomena are studied. This program is part of alarger effort on colossal magnetoresistance, the DOE Center for Synthesis andProcessing for Nanocomposite Magnets and the jumpstart plan for the Centerfor Nanoscale materials.
